After reading on Megan's blog that she heard a rumour that Lightlife was pulling their products out of Canada, I e-mailed the company to see if this was true.
This is the response I received today.
"Dear Carrie,
Thank you for your interest in our company and products. Yes it is true. Lightlife is no longer available in Canada. We stopped selling our products in Canada a few months ago. We found that consumers really wanted us, they want to have the choices. But the stores either won't bring us in or won't keep us long after we're in. We tried very hard for about eight years to really make a go of it and finally threw in the towel. We wish we could had made it work.

Why does this always happen?!
Look! It's even making babies cry!

Hey there Carrie,
the tofu "fishy" marinade from Cookin Southern Vegetarian Style is
1/4 cup tamari mixed w/ 1/4 cup water
2 tsp kelp powder
1 tsp dry mustard
1 clove garlic pressed
1/4 cup olive oil
good squeeze of lemon
good for 1 pound of tofu
I followed the lunch box for coating - SO GOOD! the kids gave it 10 thumbs up!
and for the chicken fried seitan
I use vegan w/ a vengeance seitan recipe (http://www.theppk.com/recipes/dbrecipes/index.php?RecipeID=112) and add 1tsp each Rosemary, thyme, sage and 1/4 tsp each cumin and garlic powder to the dry ingredients.
The last post I coated it using Jay-Lo's fried chicken from La Dolce Vegan
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk
mix dry in one bowl
milk in another
and dip in flour then milk then flour again.
I also add a dab of mustard to the milk and not quite a whole 1/2 tsp of salt (its just a bit much for my taste. I have used plain soy, plain rice and in a pinch vinilla soy all w/ good results.
I have also added hot sauce to milk - FABULOUS!! great for wraps!
You could also try this recipe

It makes ALOT I only use about 1/2 of it at a time and save the rest.
Do you use bisquick? there is a recipe on the back of the box for baked fried chicken - I have actually done that w/ seitan and it works great too!
Now go make some seitan, eh?
Happy cooking!! Take care,
Julee

My own attempt at nuggets..

dry
3/4 cup corn starch
1/2 tsp paprika
2 tsp garlic
2tsp onion
1/2 tsp pepper

1 tbl sugar..
dunk nugget size seitan in wet, dredge in dry, and fry

Julee, you are da bomb! Thanks for typing that all out. All of these sound great! I'm going to print them off right now.
I really, really hate when companies do that. I understand that they tried to make a go of it in Canada, and that they can only hack it for so long, but if they've been here for 8 years, why did I only hear of them for the first time on Megan's blog? Have they thought about advertising maybe? If we knew what was out there, we might be more inclined to try it.
Aw, I know how you feel. Like I feel when Trader Joe's discontinues a beloved product. sniff.
If you ever need a care package mailed to you, let me know! I'm pretty close to Canada- I can priority mail the goods!
Sorry to hear Lightlife is leaving Canada! Maybe they'll be back?
I have had their veggie breakfast sausage a couple of times, which is pretty good, but I do like the tempeh and white bean sausage from Vegan with a Vengeance better . . . me and processed foods (even all natural ones) don't always agree! I don't call myself a food snob for nothing, I guess!
Boo!!!
If you ever want me to send you some, let me know!
I don't know if i could survive w/out Lightlife. I prefer it to Yves!
That's so stinky...
I'm so sorry!
Sad to see this, Carrie, but thanks for the alert :)
Actually, I'm just taking the opportunity here of saying Hello and saying what a GRRRRREAT blog you have here! I'm so impressed. Atta girl!!!
I have a tiny blog, thanks to you and your suggestions:
http://beanvegan.blogspot.com
It's pretty well all about recipes.
Chat another time!
Love to you and everyone here -
Pat (from Vegetarians In Canada) aka River
What a bummer! Maybe you can talk one of your local grocers into stocking it?
Ugh - as a fellow Canuck, I'm all too familiar with not being able to get stuff in Canada! It sucks!
But it's even worse when they choose to discontinue offering it :(
