Wine Braised Roulades, Sexy Celebs & Revengeful Geese

How's that for a title?

I was in a seitan mood so I pulled out my new copy of The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook. A recipe called Wine-Braised Wheat-Meat Roulades caught my eye. Dinner was decided.

This was actually very simple to put together, but very gourmet in looks and taste. I used seitan that I had on hand, but the next time, I think I would make a batch just for this particular recipe. The seitan is supposed to be cut very thin in an approximate 3x6-inch size. Shaping a piece and cooking with this in mind would have made it easier for me to slice to the size required.

We had the roulades with some sweet peas & baby carrots and roasted potatoes. I wish I had had some of those tiny potatoes, but this worked just as well.

The slices of seitan were placed in a marinade of red wine, olive oil, garlic and herbs. I chose this wine and it worked wonderfully. We had the rest with dinner.

Once the roulades were finished, I made a red wine reduction sauce with what was left making sure to scrape up all the bits on the bottom of the pan. That was then spooned on top. The sauce was incredibly delicious!

Here's a shot of inside. Spinach, carrots and peppers were used and everything was cooked to perfection! This would be an excellent thing to serve at a dinner party. For a more informal dish, a bed of spinach could be topped with the carrots, peppers and strips of the seitan all smothered with that delicious red wine sauce. This one is definitely a 10!

5 days in Vegas? Whoa! 3 days was definitely enough for me. I think I reached the breaking point when I was up at 4pm still putting money into a machine and barely keeping my eyes open. I had to think, "what am I doing here!?" But it was all fun!

Ok, so I'll need to be on a mission to find this recipe since it sounds like many folks want it. Let me see what I can come up with!

Hey Carrie, it's been a while! That looks awesome. I haven't had seitan in so long! This is really making me want some. Hehe I like how you did have "meat" and potatoes.

Looks wonderful. We can't buy ready made seitan here in South Africa and I flopped with trying to make it with flour but heard over the weekend where I can buy gluten powder and the person who told me said he made brilliant seitan from it :)

Oooh, fancy! I'll keep this in mind next time I have folks over for dinner. Definitely dinner party fare. I voted, Jared Leto is hot. Though I hear the accounts of his vegetarianism may be exaggerated, might just be one of those no red meat folks.

Incredible-looking roulade! I have yet to venture into the land of mock-meats . . . I'm still happy in tofu-tempeh-legumes land for now. Sometime soon, though.

P.S. I'm back posting -- couldn't stay away for as long as I had originally planned!

That roulade had me drooling, Carrie ;) I haven't tried 'bending' seitan/wheatmeat, but I'm going to give it a go next time I make some! Thanks for a great idea! Hugs.

What an utterly perfect vegan meat + potatoes (+ wine!) meal. Kudos!
And it would be sad poetic justice if fois gras eaters were to get sick from it. Boooo.

Hi Carrie! Thanks! Oh good to know I'm not the only one with floppy tortillas. Your roulades look so delicious. If I tried making something like that, I highly doubt it'd stay together looking so perfect. Ha. I haven't tried seitan yet, but I think I will be soon!
